Conceptualized by renowned hospitality designer Bilkey Llinas, Yi Café, the all day dining restaurant at Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai, invites guests on an international culinary journey, where all the kitchen’s a stage, featuring 10 show kitchens set in a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Located on Level 2 between the hotel’s Grand Tower and River Wing, Yi Café’s walk-through market style design, with gourmet showcases and active live cooking stations, presents cuisines from China, Japan, Middle East, India, South East Asia as well as the best from the West.
Upon arrival, the fashionably-clad service associates welcome guests to the ultimate dining experience. Table seating is in clusters, spreading throughout the 120-m long restaurant, highlighted by cushioned seating in complementary colours. Encasing the entire length of the restaurant on both sides are floor to ceiling glass walls, enabling clear views of the great outdoors or of the hotel’s double-level elegant interiors.
The restaurant stages an artful display of show kitchens, set out in interesting juxtapositions, each with its unique character and style of cuisine. All have one thing in common - happy chefs interacting with delighted guests. Constantly, appetizing food is being prepared, and served hot off the pan, wok, grills and ovens amid animated conversation between chefs and guests.
As in a treasure hunt, deciding which show kitchen to go to first, is half the fun. Getting there and walking away with the food of one’s choice, resembles ‘finding the treasure’. The show kitchens are categorized as follows:
Chinese: Roast, hot foods, dim sum
Middle Eastern:Tagine and oven-baked dishes from the Middle Eastern world
Malaysian: Roti canai, spring rolls, grills and satays
Indian: Some of the best curries in town, and specialties from the Tandoor oven
Western: Featuring a chef’s every dream – a handmade Molteni kitchen range, offers rotisserie, Mediterranean cooking, pasta station
Noodle Bar: Choice of home-made, hand-pulled Asian noodles, with a variety of soup bases, toppings and condiments
Seafood: Japanese Sushi and Sashimi, and an exciting selection of fresh seafood
Salads and Thai: Choice of salads and dressings plus Thai salads and hot food
Ice Cream & Candy Bar: Ice creams, fruit, cookies and candies galore
Dessert & Deli: A mouth-watering selection of desserts and freshly baked breads, savouries.
If the buffet selection is too much to take in, an a la carte menu is also available.
Complementing the meal are Yi Café’s signature iced teas or a wine list featuring over 250 imported and local wines.
For private dining, there are four rooms catering to groups of 6 – 12 persons. Top of the list is the Ginger Room, perched on a mezzanine level, accessible via a glass staircase. From here, diners are able to view the colourful activity below, while staying ‘away from it all’ – thus enjoying the best of both worlds. The other rooms are Tamarind, Masala and Gingko. |
