The opening in October 2009 of The Peninsula Shanghai celebrates its heritage with the revival of Afternoon Tea Dances which was introduced from Europe in 1923. It is being held every first Saturday in The Lobby commencing last December. The tea dances are the most glamorous way for Shanghai’s European and wealthy Chinese community to spend their afternoons.
The high society events were a fixture of Shanghai’s social calendar until their appeal waned in the early 1940s, due to the Second World War and the introduction of large nightclubs with full orchestras.
Today The Peninsula Shanghai revives the tradition of the Afternoon Tea Dance every first Saturday when guests can relive the glamour and style of the “good old days” as The Peninsula’s 18-piece big band transports dancers back to the Shanghai of its heyday with dance and Shanghainese musical classics, together with the traditional Peninsula Afternoon Tea.
The Peninsula Afternoon Tea is a celebrated and much-loved signature feature in the Lobby of every Peninsula hotel around the world. Finger sandwiches, scones, cream and jam, cakes and pastries are presented on three-tiered silver stands, served with an extensive selection of Peninsula teas and accompanied by the melodies of The Peninsula musicians. Afternoon tea is rooted in British custom since its introduction by the Duchess of Bedford in 1830 in London and has been a welcomed ritual ever since.
